What Are The Stages of Stomach Cancer? – (TNM Staging) – Part 3

The TNM System Grouping

Stage 111A – (T2, N3, M0) The cancer has extended its metastasis into the main muscle layer of the stomach wall (muscularis propria [T2]). Now 7 regional lymph nodes have been affected (N3). The cancer has not yet reached any distant tissues or organs (M0).

or (T3, N2, M0) The cancer has now affected the subserosa, although it has not metastasized through all the layers to the outside of the stomach (T3). Between 3 – 6 regional lymph nodes have now been affected (N2). The cancer has not yet reached any distant tissues or organs (M0).

Stage 111B – (T3, N3, M0) The cancer has now affected the subserosa, although it has not metastasized through all the layers to the outside of the stomach (T3). Now 7 regional lymph nodes have been affected (N3). The cancer has not yet reached any distant tissues or organs (M0).

or (T4a, N2, M0) The cancer has now metastasized through all the layers of the stomach wall into the outer covering of the stomach (the serosa); however, it has not affected any regional tissues or organs such as: the kidneys, the pancreas, the intestines, or the spleen (T4a). Between 3 – 6 regional lymph nodes have now been affected (N2). The cancer has not yet reached any distant tissues or organs (M0).

or (T4b, N0 or N1, M0) The cancer has now metastasized through all the layers of the stomach and into regional organs such as: the intestines, the liver, the pancreas, the spleen, or major blood vessels (T4b). It may also have metastasized to up to 2 regional lymph nodes (N0 or N1). The cancer has not yet reached any distant tissues or organs (M0).

Stage 111C – (T4a, N3, M0) The cancer has now metastasized through all the layers of the stomach wall into the outer covering of the stomach (the serosa); however, it has not affected any regional tissues or organs such as: the kidneys, the pancreas, the intestines, or the spleen (T4a). Now 7 regional lymph nodes have been affected (N3). The cancer has not yet reached any distant tissues or organs (M0).

or (T4b, N2 or N3, M0) The cancer has now metastasized through all the layers of the stomach and into regional organs such as: the intestines, the liver, the pancreas, the spleen, or major blood vessels (T4b). It has metastasized between 3 – 7 regional lymph nodes (N2 or N3). The cancer has not yet reached any distant tissues or organs (M0).

Stage 1V – (Any T or N, M1) The cancer has now metastasized to distant organs such as the brain, liver, lungs, or the bones (M1).

This concludes the TNM Staging System that can be found in previous articles “What Are The Stages of Stomach Cancer? – (TNM Staging) – Part 1 and 2.”
